Microorganism Application to Produce Self Healing Concrete

Abstract


Nowadays, most kind of infrastructures use concrete as the main material in the constructions. However, the manufacture of concrete does not come to a stop as the completion of the infrastructure, such as building. To ensure the feasibility of infrastructure, concrete as the main material needs to be routinely maintained. If this maintenance is not carried out, one of the most common problem is concrete crack. When a concrete cracks, the cost to repair the concrete is greatly costive. Therefore, there is an innovation where a concrete mix is mixed with some microorganism to create a concrete that is able to heal itself (self-healing concrete). This innovation is made to prevent further dangerous damages of concrete infrastructure. Those microorganisms can secrete compounds that could form deposits of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) which able to fill a cracks that emerge in the concrete. One of the benefits of this innovation is this could reduce the high maintenance cost.
